Modern Elder Academy
I'm at the Modern Elder Academy in Baja Sur (South), Mexico for a week. It's a new part of the world for me and the beginning of a new chapter of travel and exploration. I've spent the last three weeks resting and recovering at my children's home in LA. Bless them, bless them, bless them.
Modern Elder is the brainchild of Chip Conley, who joined Airbnb in its infancy after a successful career in Hospitality. The program is about re-defining age, work and life transitions - re-framing Elder as a "Mentern", someone who brings wisdom to work (Mentor) while learning new skills (Intern) from the young. It's no mistake that my young, dynamic nephew, Jessie Stettin, brought ME to my attention, modeling just how it works!
I have struggled mightily over the past five years to re-frame over 30 years of experience as an artist, writer, dreamworker, homemaker, mother, and performer. My substantial body of work has mostly been hidden, a great deal of it literally in the closet. Five years ago, Deena Metzger told me "it's time to use my gifts and skills for the community." I'm looking forward to the re-envisioning process at Modern Elder. Workshops and processes of this nature have been powerful learning experiences for me. Meanwhile, the environment they've created here in Baja is so beautiful, so carefully tended that no matter what happens this week, it will be a blessing. And, bless you, dear Reader, for coming with me on this journey.
